About

In 2009, the federal definition of homelessness changed, and excluded doubling up with family or friends, also known as “couch surfing.” That meant a number of women veterans who would have been considered homeless prior to the rule change in 2009 no longer were. Still, they were precariously housed, and at risk of homelessness. The need for a state-by-state directory of housing resources dedicated to women veterans made itself known, and this project is the result. If you know of specific housing resources to add which are dedicated to women veterans, you are encouraged to do so by submitting a form.

The precursor to this website owes its existence to a Howard G. Buffett inaugural grant from the International Women’s Media Foundation, to create a multimedia reporting project about female veteran homelessness. This website was created and is maintained by Lily Casura.
